RACING CARNIVAL.

COMMENCEMENT OP HOLIDAY MEETINGS.

MANAWATU CUP TO CLARINDA.

RAPINE WINS AUCKLAND CUP.

The holiday race meetings commenced on Saturday, excellent weather generally being experienced. The chief event at Awapuni was won by Mr It. A. McKenzie’s Clarinda and the Auckland Cup by Rapine. The totalisator returns at Awapuni and Auckland showed a heavy increase compared With the opening days last year. In fact, betting was brisk at practically every meeting. According to the returns as telegraphed for racing and trotting, the sum of £347,996 was handled on Saturday. The total for the first day of the similar meetings in 1924 was £297,925 10s. -

MANAWATU’S SUCCESSFUL FIXTURE.

BIG INCREASE IN TOTALISATOR RECEIPTS.

GRAND KNIGHT WINS FLYING.

There was an extremely large attendance of racing enthusiasts at Awapuni for tho opening day of the Manawatu Racing Club’s summer meeting, sportsmen being present from all quarters of the southern portion of tho North Island. The course was in excellent order following the intermittent showers which had been experienced during the preceding days and as a result tho scratching pen was little in evidence. Somo splendid racing was forthcoming, tho finishes, save in one or two instances, being particularly close and wagering throughout tho day was extremely heavy, for although not a singlo first favourite won, the public’s second fancy filled lirst place on three occasions and second twice, while tho third order won twice and returned second dividend three times. For the second year in succession, the local sportsman, Mr It. A. McKenzie had tho honour of leading in tho winner, his candidate, Clarinda, winning in one of the finest finishes witnessed in the event for many years. Tho daughter of Kilbroncy was indifferently placed at the distanco, but coming through her field in resolute fashion won handsomely from tho Fordell candidate, Enthusiasm. In tho big six, Grand Knight likewise secured the honours from the little fancied Shirley, who only lost out over tho. last hit, tho pair being well clear of Peneus, the favourite. In the Tararua Welter Opa brought off a sur-

prise victory, while tho locally-own-ed Newburry King likewise returned his backers an excellent price for second. Tho final event .provided tho most substantial victory of tho day, Modem proving herself to bo a high class animal by romping homo from a strong field. While tho cup was tho heaviest betting race of the programme, tho final event recorded but £IOOO less and the total sum handled by the totalisator was £57,765 as against £50,333 for last year and £52,634 for 1923.

ing a brief delay owing to some unruly horses, the field was sent atvay in excellent line from which Westbrolce, White Comet, Rouex and King Pot were the first to emerge.
