SAVED BY SURF CLUB.
SWIMMER’S PERILOUS PLIGHT. RESCUE AT NEW BRIGHTON. CHRISTCHURCH, Dec. 21. A bathing accident at New Brighton yesterday afternoon nearly had fatal consequences for Mr Sydney Pearce, who has cause to be thankful that the New Brighton Surf Club is an active organisation. Mr Pearce, who io a good swimmer, dived from the pier, but was immediately caught by the current and washed in among the piles. The strength of the tide made it impossible for him to get to safety, and in addition to being washed against the timbers and suffering injury from shellfish he rapidly became exhausted. His position had become serious when a team of life savers from the New Brighton Club got to him, using the reel and line. The team soon had Mr-*Pearce back on the beach. Ho was completely exhausted by his struggle with the current and breakers, and it was some time before he fully recovered from the effects of liis perilous experience.
