DISTINCT CHANGE.
SITUATION IN SYRIA. DRUSE REVOLT SUBSIDES. PARIS, Dec. 21. A distinct change in tlie situation in Syria was announced by M. Briand in a statement in the Chamber of Deputies. Ho said that the Druse revolt had largely subsided and that the local inhabitants at present were defending themselves against bands of marauders. M. Painleve, in reviewing the situation, argued that General Sarraii was forced by tho facts to fire a few shells into Damascus to avoid very serious events. When M. Briand again spoke he was continually interrupted by tho Communists. t Tho Premier pointed out that France was exhausted financially and militarily after the Great War and had no taste for fresh warlike adventures, but had been attacked. France could not evade the execution of - tlio mandate. The speech was loudly cheered except by the Communists.—Reuter. GENERAL SARRAIL. DEFENDED BY M. PAINLEVE. Received December 22, 11.10 a.m. PARIS, Dec. 21. In the Chamber M. Pair.levc warmly defended General Sarraii who, ho stated, had to cope with a difficult situation in Syria from the beginning. He had possibly made-a few errors, which had been greatly exaggerated.— lleuter.
