ATTEMPT TO BREAK RECORD
FAILS.
Per Press Association. WANGANUI, Nov. 29. At the Wanganui Amateur Athletic Association’s carnival on Saturday A. Rose, long distance champion of New Zealand, mado an unsuccessful attempt to break the three mile Australian and New Zealand record established at Cook’s Gardens at tho championship meeting last season. His time for the distance was 15min 5 3-ssecs, 20 2-5 secs short of the record. A strong westerly wind that swept tho ground militated against fast times, while in addition to this there was no competition capable of extending Rose, and he had to finish the last three-quar-ters of a mile without being paced. Ho sprinted ovor tho last forty yards and finished comparatively fresh amid the plaudits of a large crowd of spectators.

AJtRIVAL EARLY IN JANUARY,
WELLINGTON, Nov, 28. Scholz, the American athlete, has left America for Honolulu, where he will join the Niagara for New Zealand. The vessel is due to arrive at Auckland on January 4.
