WEDNESDAY COMPETITIONS. OPENING MATCHES CONCLUDED. Climatic conditions were not too favourable for the continuation of the Wednesday cricket competition yesterday. The matches at the Sportsground saw Gordon and Kia Ora secure wins on the first innings from Railway and Old Boys respectively, while the game at North Street Park resulted in a win for Albion. GORDON v. RAILWAY. When stumps were drawn last week Gordon had scored 189 in their first innings. Railway started promisingly in their first strike yesterday, Ongley and Mullins, the opening men, compiling 104 between them, with the three following batsmen all getting into double figures. But there were only seven men available for batting, and the innings closed at 153. Gordon, in their second visit to the wickets, had compiled 90 for four wickets when stumps were drawn. The High School team thus won by 36 runs on the first innings. Details: GORDON. First innings 189 Second Innings. ALBION ,v. PHOENIX. Albion and Phoenix, the two High School teams which had occupied the Terrace End Park the previous week, continued their game on the same playing area. On the opening clay Albion, taking first strike, had occupied the wickets the whole afternoon for the substantial total of 387, setting their opponents a heavy task on resumption and which, as it proved, was all too great for Phoenix, and the honours of the day passed to Albion by a margin of an innings and 213 runs, the winners thus annexing four competition points. At their first visit to the wickets Phoenix compiled 119, of which Mason was responsible for 60. They were thus compelled to follow on and could only muster 55 at their second strike. Seymour and McDonald shared the bowling honours for Albion in the first innings, whilo O’Keefe and Seymour proved the destructive agents in the second. Following are the detailed scores:— PHOENIX.
