Mr Bowerman, the Labour M.P. with the Empire Press Delegation, in a letter to his wife, said: ‘‘During one of the long railway journeys in Australia Viscountess Burnham walked along the corridor and asked bachelor delegates and those travelling without their wives whether they required their socks darning or buttons sewn on. “She explained that she had done mending since childhood, and would be pleased to help any unfortunate delegates ”
