POLLING TO-DAY. KEEN INTEREST EVINCED. The vigorous election campaign of tlie past four weeks terminated las night, and polling took place out the Dominion to-day. In 1 all ston North the day broke dull and there was a threat of ) ; un, " ' eventually fell in showers after midday, but conditions did not cloud the optimism'of the two candidates. The polling booths opened at .11. and from that hour onwards their, was a steady stream of electors to iccord their votes. At the main po ing place, the Empire Hall, there was great activity, cars being continually on the move. Polling at the otei principal booths was also heavy dm g the morning, and there was every indication of a record minincr ot votes being cast in this electorate. Both candidates and the contending factions in . the licensing issue had supporters outside the principal polling places, directing the motor cars, answering questions, supplying electors’ numbers and generally 1 aeilitating arrangements for the prompt iecording of votes. It was noticeable, as was only to lie expected, that, during the 11101 ning, women constituted the larger propoition of those recording their votes. Polling in the Palmerston electorate closes at 7 o’clock this evening. Electors were given the choice of li polling places, the total number of booths being 30. In the Manawatua and Oroua electorates, where there are 32 and 51 places where electors may record their votes, polling closes at 6, o’clock. . , Supporters of Labour and Reform in this electorate both expressed confidence as to the ultimate lesult, while the same confidence was apparent with the advocates working for both prohibition and continuance. Owing to the influx of visitors for the opening of the Manawatu and West Coast A. and P. Society’s Spring Show, provision was made for the large number of electors from other districts who desired to vote here. At the Showgrounds there were six booths, at the Oddfellows’ Hall four and at the Empire Hall two. Early indications pointed to a large number of absent votes being recorded. ELECTION RESULTS. DISPLAY AT THE “STANDARD” OFFICE. Complete arrangements have been made for announcing the election results at the “Standard” office this evening. The returns as they come to hand will be posted on a huge hoarding, in addition to which there will be the usual lantern display, by means of which the figures will be thrown on a large screen. The hoarding was viewed with satisfaction today by a large section of the public, and providing the weather is fine this evening there should be a record crowd to view the results of the election.
