LESSON FROM AMERICA

AGRICULTURAL EXPERT’S MISSION.

t DUNEDIN, Aug. 15 Mr. R. B. Tennent, of the Agricultural Department, who visited America on behalf of the Goverment to investigate irrigation in the Western States of tho Pacific Slope, recntly- returned, after covering a distance of 11,000 miles in four months. Starting from San Francisco ho travelled down the coast of California to San Diego, and from there into tho famous Imperial Valley, which lies half in California and half in Mexcio. Detailed inspection of this largo system was made, and tho long journey from Mexico to Canada was commenced by way of San Joajuim Valley, Sacramento Valley, through the States of Oregon anf Washington, and into British Columbia. The States of Idaho and Utah were also included in Mr Tennent’s itinerary, and every irrigation scheme of any importance was closely inspected. In addition Mr Tennent spent a considerable amount of time at

the principal-agricultural colleges of each State, and a thorough study was made of tho principles and practices of irrigation as taught in those institutions.

Mr Tennent was deeply impressed with the excellent research work being carried on in those colleges, and he obtained much valuable knowledge in regard to water and other important problems relating to irrigation practice.
