FORESTRY IN SCHOOLS.
WINTER SHOW COMPETITION.
MR DALHYMPLE’S SUGGESTIONS.
Suggested conditions for a school forestry class for the next Winter Show were contained in a letter received at to-dav’s meeting of the committee of the Manawatu A. and P. Association from Mr K. W. Dalrymple, of Bulls. Mr Dalrymple suggested that the prize money be £5, £'3 and £2,- which would cover the donations promised by him. A shield, too, he suggested, might bo provided, such trophy to be held by the winning school for one year. The conditions drawn •up he had sent to the Forestry Department for perusal and it was mentioned that the department would provide seed freo and give all necessary advice to schools. The district he had not restricted, but ho would like- to see it as wide as possible. The suggested conditions stipulated, inter alia, that each school raise not less than 305 seedlings of tw.o or more species of useful timber or shelter trees —encalypti, pinus insignis, or cupressus. At the Winter Show each school would exhibit specimens in boxes, also full notes as to the plants’ growth, and show a collection of any six New Zealand woods giving English and (or) Maori and botanical names. Other minor conditions were appended. The Forestry Department wrote expressing its pleasure at the move and making suggestions as to the conditions of competition. Tho president (Mr J. H. Perrett) said that the competition should bo very successful indeed. The donor of the prizes having been thanked the president and secretary were deputed to finalise details.
