COAL SUBSIDY.

OBJECTION BY MR THOMAS. UNHAPPY OVER THE VICTORY. Received August 18. 9.5 a.m. LONDON, Aug. 17. Mr .T. H. Thomas, addressing 10.900 railwaymen at the anual demonstration at Liverpool, attacked the granting of a subsidy to the coal industry which, lie said, was like a dog eating its own tail, “t am frankly unhappy over tho much-boosted recent victory. Nothing is more dangerous to a country’s future than for the employers and the Government to he compelled to concede by force what they refused by reason, making the working classes imagine that the only way to get justice is to threaten to strike. We wholeheartedly supported the miners in the recent issue, and the Government should have recognised the reasonableness of our claims.”—-Sydney Sun cable.
