ANOTHER DISPUTE
REFUSAL TO SUPPLY CREW. ALLEGED BREAKING OF AGREEMENT. (By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) Received August 18, 10.5 a.m. MELBOURNE, Aug. IS. The steamer Marraivali, belonging to the Holyinaii Line, is held up at Melbourne owing to the refusal by the Seamen’s Union to supply a crew. The Commonwealth Steamship Owners’ Association takes a serious view of the matter as it contends that by refusing to supply a crew tlie seamen have broken the agreement which was signed on the 6th inst. Tho trouble arose when tlie Alarraivnh returned to Alelbournc from Tasmania. The chief engineer dismissed two firemen who, it is alleged, were unsuitable. The men were given 24 hours’ notice and offered five days’ wages in addition to overtime, which was accepted. A call was then made by the company for two other men, but although over 100 men were present there was no response, the union officials demanding the reinstatement of the firemen or that they he given 14 days’ pay., This the company refused, and when further calls had the same result the remainder of tlie crew were paid off. The dispute will now probably be referred to the Cumulation Board as provided by tho agreement.—Press Association.
