HOSPITALITY TO VISITORS.
SAILORS ENTERTAINED. Per Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, Aug. 17. The barrier of reserve between the Christchurch public and the sailors from the Fleet has now almost completely disappeared and in its place there has developed a keenness among the citizens to outdo each other in the matter of hospitality to the visitors. It is now a rare sight to see sailors unaccompanied by civilians. To-day a largo contingent of officers and men made an excursion to Otira, while the evening was filled in with public and private entertainments. . Yesterday Rear-Admiral Schofield and party paid a visit to ltapaki and wore entertained with true Maori hospitality. A daughter of the chief, Mrs Tinui, asked the Admiral’s acceptance of a handsome pin pin with which she proceeded to invest him. To fasten it she had perforco to put her arms around his neck without him kissing her. The Admiral, to the intense delight of the assembled Maoris and Pakehas, and even a chuckle from the chief, proceeded to salute, the donor in the time honoured manner.
