FOXTON NEWS

(From Our Own Correspondent.) Just prior to leaving Wellington for Foxton last Thursday with a cargo of benzine, tho s.s. Kennedy developed engine trouble and was prevented from sailing. Repairs were effected by Friday, however, and the vessel left that night, and arrived in port on Saturday.

Heavy fog enveloped Foxton and district several evenings last week. The conference of local bodies to have been held last Tuesday to discuss matters in connection with the Shannon bridge was postponed, and will be held on Wednesday next at the bridge. Although all the flood water is not yet off the Whirokino, the road is now passable by motor vehicles. This year the flood waters have receded far quicker than at any time previously, and this- fact is attributed to the cutting through of the flood bank on Mr F. Woods’s property by the Drainage Board. The Presbyterian Ladies’ Guild held the usual monthly meeting in the Sunday school room. There was a record attendance of 34 Indies and seven or eight children, and a. -most enjoyable time was spent by everyone present. More than one Foxton resident at present has cause to lament the disappearance of clothes left on lines overnight. Petty thieving of this nature is prevalent. Whitebait is now making its apjx'arance in the Manawatu river again in small quantities. One local resident is reported to have caught 21bs last week. During (he last flood, three of the pontoons made to support the pipe-line to carry spoil from the dredge Hennessey to the shore, stacked at the jetty at the beach, were swept away and carried out to sea. The Marine Department, was immediately notified of the fact, as it was thought that the rafts would be a menace to shipping. The secretary of the 'Harbour Board last week received word, however that the pontoons are on the Hokio Beach, some miles south of Foxton
