PITIFUL STORY.
WIFE LOCKED UP FOR TWO v YEARS. PARIS, July 18. In consequence of an anonymous letter, the police visited the chateau of Charles Soler, litteratur and explorer, at Chateney-en-l’rance, Pointoise, and found Madame Soler lying in the topmost room, the door of which was chained and padlocked. She was shockingly emaciated and told the police a pitiful story. She alleged she had been confined for two years by her husband, who demanded that she should make a will in his favour. Eventually, she yielded under threats. She now charges her husband of attempting to kill her by slow starvation. The woman 1 certainly appeared to be a living skeleton. She saw no one but her husband’s secretary, Mademoiselle do la Plange, who unlocked the door to the polico only, it is alleged, under protest. Mndainc Soler was taken to hospital and her husband and secretary charged with sequestration and violence.—A. and N.Z. cable.
