FIJIAN CHIEF’S DEATH.
“MOUTHPIECE OF GOVERNOR.” SUVA, July 9. The death is announced of Ratu Aisea Komitai, of Bau. The, deceased was a fine type of the old stamp of Fijian gentleman, courteous and dignified. He had the honour of being the mata-ni-vanua or herald or mouthpiece of the Governor at all formal occasions, for it is never allowed for the “great chief” to speak direct; he must always speak through a “mouthpiece.” Ratu Aisea was the head of the Tuinitoga branch of the* Matagali, of the Matanivanui, attached to the Vunivalu of Bau. He had been Governor’s mata-ni-vanua since 1911. He was also Buli of Bau from 1894 to 1900, and from 1909 to 1911. He was 65 years old, and leaves four sons and two daughters.
