MANAWATU UNION. MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE MEETS. The weekly meeting of the Management Committee of the Manawatu Rugby Union was held last evening when tho president, Mr A. Hannay, presided over a large attendance of players. CORRESPONDENCE. From Jaekevtown Club asking that, in the event of the junior competition being drawn in two divisions, Jackeytown be included in the first division, thus obviating a bye.—The letter was received, it now being the intention of the union to proceed with the competition as heretofore. From Feilding Club advising that its fourth grade team had recently found itself unable to raise a full complement and, further, that there did not appear to be any prospect of it doing so , again this season. —Received.

From the Referees’ Association advising that, in the Kia Ton-Feilding junior game, two spells of 30 minutes had been played, hence the apparent short time complained of. —Received. From Western-United Club forwarding "doctor’s certificate for H. Stone, who had been injured in the WesternLinton junior game. —Received. From Woodville Club regretting that, owing to members having gone into camp, its fourth grade team had been compelled to default last Saturday and enquiring whether, as a further draft would go in on Wednesday (to-day), rule 8 under club contests applied under such circumstances. A money order for £l4 2s was enclosed, being gate receipts for June 27 and July 11, after deduction of expenses £1 4s. —It was decided that, in matches where a team is compelled to default owing to its members being called upon to fulfill their military obligations, rule 8, relative to two successive defaults or three at intervals compelling the team to withdraw, should not apply in such cases. From Bunnythorpe Club advising that it was highly probable that it would not be able to field a team again this season and it would no doubt assist the other teams by withdrawing. —Received.

From Feilding High School Club asking whether its bye could be granted on August 15 on account of school holidays. Permission was also asked for the school to play its annual matches with Hawera and Stratford High Schools in their respective towns between August 9 and 14. —The draw grants the team the bye as requested. Permission was granted for tho school to play the fixtures mentioned From Western-United Club applying for the re-grading of S. Hughie from senior to junior.—Granted. The game had provided a very interesting match and had been generally appreciated. A return match was greatly desired, the sub-union being willing to play at Feilding or Palmerston North. —The prospect of a future match was viewed with favour and a date for same will be arranged later. From the New Zealand Rugby Union advising that the agreement in connection with the amalgamation of the Horowhenua and Manawatu unions had been received and approval would not be delayed as soon as the new constitution was submitted. —Received. Wardrop was appointed manager of the Manawatu team. The secretary was empowered to arrange for the erection of a score board at the Showgrounds. MISTAKEN IDENTITY.

In furtherance of the report received at last week’s meeting relative to A. Mail’, of Woodville Club, being sent off the field during the progress of the senior match at Palmerston North between that club and Old Boys, Mr P. 0. Skoglund, tho referee, detailed the circumstances leading up to his action. He stated that, while no actual rough play had been employed, the actions of Mail- had been tending to place the game out of control, he on two occasions having allegedly played the man when the latter was not in possession of the ball. Mail- also attended, and stated that, while he had had conversations with the referee during the progress of the game, he had not, to his knowledge, been guilty of playing the man. Messrs W. Dustin and K. Eglinton pointed out that, in their opinion, the wrong man had been ordered from the field. From what they had seen it was another member of the Woodville team who was to blame.

Mr Hannay stated that, while he was always prepared to uphold the Referees’ Association, it certainly appeared that it had been a case of mistaken identity. . Mr Faire then moved, and it was seconded by Mr K. Eglinton, that the offender had been sufficiently punished by his being sent off the field. ” As an amendment Mr C. W. White moved, and it was seconded by Mr T. Pagan, that Mail- bo stood down for the remainder of the season.

Mr Lyons pointed out that, as there had been no offence, no penalty was required. Several other speakers held similar views, Mr White holding that it was the duty of the union to support the referees and the latter’s word should be taken before that of a player. Mr Faire pointed out that, even if the actual offence which had led up to the final action of the referee had resulted in a mistake on that official’s part, there had been prior offences, and the one under review had been merely the culminating point, heuce Mail- had not been guiltless. When put to the meeting the motion was carried by seven votes to four. JUNIOR RE-DRAW. Fixtures for balance of season (July
