IMPORTATION OF ARMS
AMUSING CHINESE CASE. CUSTOMS AND “HUMANE KILLER.” SHANGHAI, May 28. In view of the embargo on' the importation of arms into China, the customs authorities are constantly on the alert to check .this illicit traffic. At the same time certain mistakes are apt to occur through excessive zeal on lie part of some budding inspector-general. A local citizen recently imported from England a special contrivance for slaughtering pigs known as a “Humane Killer.” When the machine arrived the Chinese customs official'overlooked the last letter in the word “humane,” and thinking that the machine was some special contrivance for the slaughtering of the enemy, had the “killer” placed under lock and key in the customs warehouse for munitions of war.
The importer was then officially notified that special permission must be obtained from Pekin before he could take possession of his “human killer.”
