CODDLED CONVICTS.
JOY JAUNTS OUT OF GAOL,
ADELAIDE, June 18
The escape from the Ytatla Labour Prison of the convict Alfred Neill, who has not yet been recaptured, bus drawn attention to the freedom allowed to prisoners. They may receive visitors and walk about the grounds. The Chief Secretary (Mr Jelley) says the trust imposed on them not to escape has seldom been violated, but it is recalled that while other prisoners have been hospital patients they have actually been seen out in the streets. On one occasion a detective met in the street a noted criminal, who was serving three years, and when he stopped him was told, “Oh, I’m in hospital. I’m just going over tho road for a drink.” Another prisoner left the hospital and did a housebreaking job, lor which he received an extra three years. The same man during convalescence was seen driving in a buggy, and he invited a woman friend to go for a ride with him. The police are indignant at tho laxity of the prison authorities.
