FAREWELL SOCIAL.

TO XIR AND MRS McCULLY.

(From Our Own Correspondent.)

Tho local hall was tho scene of a large gathering of settlors on Friday evening last for the purpose of bidding farewell to Mr and Mrs 11. D. McCully, who have left the district and intend to reside in Bunnythorpe. . , The farewell took the form of a social, and vocal items, interspersed with games and competitions, were rendered. The following contributed to the programme : Miss Jeanne Whitelook, recitations; Mr L. Bindon, songs; Mrs A. D. Heggio> (Bunny* thorpe), songs; Master Selwyn Rowland, recitation; Mr E. P. Nielsen, songs; Miss Marjorie Rowland, recitation; and Mr 11. N. McEwen, songs. Competitions, for which the prizes were boxes of cnocolates, were won by Miss Ij. Nielsen, and Mr A. Rankin (Rangiotu). . At a suitable juncture Mr M. Richardson referred to the loss the community would Sustain through the departure of Air and Mrs McCully, who had been ever ready to assist with anything that tended to the welfare of the district. Mrs McCully had resided all her life in T iafcitahuna, while Mr McCully was a. resident for thirty years. During that time Mr McCully had served on various occasions as a member of the school committee besides acting as superintendent of the Sunday school and conducting the church services. Particularly would lie be missed in connection with the two latter to which he had been a tower of strength. Air Richardson, on behalf of the residents, wished the guests of the evening every happiness and success in the future and then called upon Air Wilson, the newly appointed Presbyterian minister, to say a few words. Air Wilson made eulogistic reference to Mr McCully’s work which, he stated, could be summed up in the words: “Well done, thou good and faithful servant.” Air iledley Wilton, of Rangiotu, also referred to the good work Air McCully had carried out in connection with the Church at Rangiotu, while Air E. P. Nielson, speaking on behalf of the scholars and teachers of the locai Sunday school, stated that Air McCully had J>een an inspiration to them all. Air Richardson then asked Air and Airs Ale Cully to accept a silver-plated kettle and spirit lamp, together with a handsome occasional table. Mr Ale Cully, on rising to reply, was greeted with applause, and stated that he found it almost too difficult to sufficiently thank all his and Airs AlcCully’s good friends, as his heart was too full. He said they had been too good in their references to him, as he had done no more than what he, considered to be his duty in connection with Sunday school, Church and other matters. If he had done some little good in impressing upon the children tho necessity for loyalty and love of God, he was very thankful. Proceedings were brought to a conclusion. by the singing of “For They are Jolly Good Fellows” and “Auld Lang Syne.” Air J. Kilpatrick, formerly manager of the Tiakitahuna dairy factory, and now of Hawera, was a recent visitor here. Other visitors also included Airs Carmichael, of Patea, Airs J. Rose and Air D. Rose, of Waipawa. The local State School was successful in winning, one first and two second prizes for vegetables at the Palmerston North show. Other prize-winners from here were Airs D. Buchanan for home industries and Air D. Buchanan, field roots. . Owing to the heavy rain during the past week the roads are in a very bad condition, and .it is stated that the Jackeytown road is in the worst condition for many years. Local amateurs have been busy for some considerable time rehearsing for a play which is to be staged early in July.
