THE WAR MEMORIAL.
WAITING ON DEPARTMENTAL ADVICE. The Mayor (Mr F. J. Nathan) was approached by a “Standard” reporter this morning with a request for information respecting the position of tho war memorial. Mr Nathan stated that the last that he had heard of the matter was when lie had been told by the authorities in Wellington that tho estimated cost ol the railway deviation in the Square (£340) would not bo exceeded. The authorities, however, undertook to revise the estimate and in place of it stipulate a iixed sum. The Mayor mentioned that he was still awaiting receipt of advice in that regard and said that, as soon as it was available, a 'public meeting would be called with a view to finalising matters affecting Hie erection of the memorial.
