GRAVITY OF THE OFFENCE. PEKIN, May 13. In connection with tho Chinese gunboat fifing on the British houseboat at Shanghai, the Consul-General yostorday pointed out to the ship’s commander, Admiral Owg, tho gravity of the offence. It was impossible then to accept an apology. He must first be satisfied that the guilty officer had been adequately punished. The question of compensation must be considered laler. —Reuter.

A houseboat, with two Britishers, Messrs Lawson Hall and Walker, and their wives and children aboard, was returning to die harbour from a pleasure trip just before nightfall. When nearing a Chinese gunboat the latter, suddenly and without warning, fired a fusillade at tho houseboat with riflo fire, Mr Lawson Hall being wounded in the thigh. Tho British Consul-General entered a strong protest. He was informed that the shooting was the outcome of the crew of the gunboat becoming panic-stricken owing to warning of un impending attack by an opposing faction.
