“FOUR JOANS.”

ENGLAND’S TENNIS HOPES

TEAM FOR AMERICA,

LONDON, May 5

Will England’s “four Joans” eventually regain England’s tennis supremacy ? The question is asked by Mrs Lam-bert-Chambers in an article in the Standard. Site saysi that at least lialf-a-do&en girls .are showing distinct possibilities of winning the international championship. There was little to choose between Joan Lycett, Joan Fry, Joan ReidTliomas and Joan Halley. Sho considered Miss Fry, after Miss McKane, the most consistent player of the younger generation in England. Naturally, Miss McKane was everybody’s first choice, but Miss Fry had plenty of pluck and determination. She also possessed a perfect match temperament. Her victory over Miss McKane was well deserved.

Mrs Lycett has improved tremendously, and had added a useful “lob” to her repertoire of strokes. Miss Ileid-Thomas possessed the best woman’s forearm drive in the country. Miss Ridley, who vanquished Miss ReidThomas at Roehampton, was probably the better all-rounder of the two, and was developing a Patterson-like overarm service.

-Miss Colyer’s poor ground shots were now spoiling her piny in singlet matches. A newcomer in Miss Peggy Saunders though at present failing at critical moments, had the greatest chance of winning the highest honours. The best team for the projected tour to America should include Misses McKano, Colyer, Saunders, Harvey and the “four Joans.”
