DAIRY FARMERS’ UNION. AWAHURI BRANCH MEETING. There was a large attendance of members at tho annual meeting of tho Awihuri branch of the Dairy Farmers’ Union. The president (Mr Neil Campbell) who is also Dominion president, presided. The death ot the Prime Minister was feelingly referred to by the chairman before the meeting proceeded to business. Mr Massey, he said, had been a life membr of the Dairy Farmers’ Union and had ever given his willing assistance to farmers irrespective of their party. Tho union had always found him sympathetic and eager to assist in any means within his power. A motion of condolence with Mrs Massey and family was carried in the usual manner.
Reviewing tho activities of the organisation during tho past year Mr Campbell said that they had been fairly successful in their efforts to secure redress for a number of grievances which the dairy farmers had been labouring under. He touched on the sympathetic hearing given by the late Prime Minister to a deputation of the Dairy Farmers’ Union last session, and was pleased to say that in nearly every instance their requests had been granted. Tho dairy research laboratory which the union had advocated for so long, was to bo erected at Wallaceville shortly, according to an announcement made by the Minister of Agriculture tho other day. Regarding the moron toriuin, the Government had made every effort to help the farmers not only by extending the period, but providing many millions for tho Advances to Settlers Department., The remission of income tax for farmers, and tho reduction of land tax, by exempting mortgages, was, the president said, directly duo to the efforts of tlio union. The necessity of bringing in tho ward system of electing the members of the Dairy Control Board was also urged by tho deputation last year, and although this had not yet been done, be felt sure the necessary legislation would be passed next year.
Referring to electrical supply in the Manawatu tho president alluded to the manner in which tho farmers had voiced their objections to the Manawatu-Oroua Power Board’s flat rote charge of £5 per horse power on motors irrespective of the unit charge. Many dairy farmers had refused to instal motors while that basis obtained but ho understood that an amendment to the tariff wa imminent.
Matters affecting organisation were presented by Mr John I. Fox who took the opportunity of congratulating the branch on its achievements and particularly on the fact that tho strength of its membership had been so well maintained throughout the year.
A number of remits for consideration at the provincial conference to be held in Palmerston North next month were passed. Mr Campbell was re-elected president and Mr A. Bond vice-president and hon. secretary. Last year’s committee was reelected and Messrs Thomas and McCrea appointed delegates to the provincial conference.
