BOXING AT TAUMARUNUI.
PURDY BEATS BROWN ON POINTS.
Par Press Association. TAUMARUNUI, March 9.
On Saturday night the Taumarunui Boxing Association held a successful tournament, the main attraction being a professional lightweight tenround bout for a £IOO purse between C. Purdy, of Auckland, New Zealand lightweight champion, and Bert Bi own, of Hamilton, featherweight champion. Purdy gained the decision on points, the fight going the full distance. Purdy and Brown gave a fine exhibition of clean, two-handed boxing. The former was delightful to watch with his lightning speed and clever evasion of Brown’s attacking moves when Brown attempted to land a right. Purdy led easily over the first half of the fight, but Brown appeared to win three of the five remaining rounds. Purdy scored heavily at in-fighting with lightning right jabs and thrusts to the body, and his defence was superb. Brown showed ..classy style, but Purdy won comfortably. The decision was a popular one.
