KAIKANGA COUNTY
MEETING OF COUNCIL, . At tho monthly meeting of tho Kdiranga County Council yesterday the Fitzherbert and Awapuni rangers reported that they had impounded 27 and 26 head of stock respectively during the month. Cr Small moved that a poll bo taken with tho view to obtaining tho consent of ratepayers of the Taonui' riding to raise a loan of £3OOO from tho State Advances Office to asphalt, and tar the BunnythorpeKairanga road from Hughes's lino to tho Longburn-Rongotea road, but, after brief discussion, it was decided to hold the matter over until the next meeting. Accounts amounting to £1563 17s Id wero passed for payment. It was decided that 10 per cent be added to all rates outstanding after March 21. ENGINEER'S REPORT. The engineer, Mr J. E. Mcnzies, reported as follows on the various works carrieo out sinco tho last meeting:—Five contracts have been in hand and an average ol 30 day men employed. Tenders for delivery of gravel received at last meeting and left to tho engineer have been dealt with as follow, tho lowest tender in each case being accepted:—No. 97, delivery to Scott's road and Linton stables, 4s lid and 7s lid per yard respectively; No. 98, delivery to Aokautcro, 5s 8d per cub. yard; No. 99, delivery to Cameron's line, 4s per cub. yard; No. 100 delivery to Awahuri bridge and Newbury corner, 3s and 5s respectively. Progress on tho Aokautero deviation work is not very rapid, but another month should seo it, very near completion. A distance of 64£ chains of Rangitikei line has received a final coat of asphalt. This completes tho surfacing to within 11 chains of Newbury corner. The surface portion of Kairanga-Bunnythorpo road in Mangaono riding, about 70 chains, has received a final coat of asphalt. The final coat of asphalt is now being put on this road in the Taonui riding. Two new concrete pipe culverts have been put in on Clevely's line to replace decayed timber structures, and one pipe culvert has been extended. An old culvert on Ngaire strtet, Longburn, collapsed and has been replaced by concrete pipes. 9 new 2ft concrete pipe culvert has been put in near tho Tiritea School. In the Taonui riding metal has been carted to dumps at Kairanga and Seale's corner and s Lockwood, and a small dump mado on No. 1 line near the soldiers' settlement. The last road has also been patched. Tho unsurfaced portions of Foxton and Rangitikei lines have been raked in with the graders on suitable occasions. Tho depression in surfacing on Foxton line near the borough boundary will be attended Jo when tho tar gang has completed the season's surfacing. Mr Dalefield has promised to clear trees, etc., from the corner of Flyger's and Rangitikei lines. In the Mangaone riding, in connection with the gravelling between Robert's line and Railway road. The length to -be gravelled is 21 1-3 chains, and the estimated cost of the work is £7O. In connection with the extension of formation, etc, Robert's line, the chairman, members for tho riding and engineer met Mr Russell on the ground and it was decided to go on with, tho formation as soon as the plant was available. Mr R. Levin has been written to and usked if ho will sell a small area of land for a gravel reserve, but so far no reply has been received. No. 2 truck has been employed calling metal to dumps at Te Matai and Railway road and this will be continued through Kelvin Grove area. No. 1 truck will assist with this work when chips have been delivered to Kai-ranga-Bunnythorpo road. The gradertractor outfit has been employed in Cleve- . ly's line widening the formation and clean-; ing out water-tables. Time did not permit, j of my obtaining an accurate estimate of the cost of surfacing Kairanga-Bunnythorpo roud from Linklater's corner to Bunny- j thorpe. If nothing unforseen happens the gravel stop, Stoney Creek, will bo put in during this month. I propose putting in a trial stop with two trees before going to tho expense of a concrete struoture. In the Fitzherbert riding work on Forest Hill road is now in- hand, and Range road will bo attended to as soon as labour can be arranged for. Sutherland's bridge is being rebuilt. The loose gravel on Main road has been raked in and ».omo maintenance metal put on the road. Water-tables, etc., on lower portion of Kahuterawa road will bo attended to this week. So far no men have been obtainable for work, on upper section of this road. General maintenance work has been carried out as required. Mr Keeble will attend to hedgo cutting at corner near Kahuterawa bridge.
