POSTAL CHARGES

COMPLAINT FROM RANGIOTU. "MYSTERY" SAYS THE POSTMASTER. A surprising statement anent the ralei said to be charged by way of exchange at the Rnngiotu telephone bureau and saving bank was made by the president of the Chamber of Commerce (Mr H. L Young) at the meeting of the council of that body yesterday. Mr Young said that a Rangiotu resident had asked him to ventilate the fact that people living- near there had to pay sixpence exchange fee on bureau calls, and that a child jwying five shillings into a post office savings account ml only credited with 4s 6d, sixpence being deducted by way of exchange. Mr L. H. Collinson : What, they pay in 5s and only are credited with 4s 6d ? Mr French: It is monstrous. Mr Young: It is another argument for a chief post office at Palmorston North. Mr R. Martin (postmaster) said that he could not understand the meaning of the complaint If the deductions in respect to the savings bank had applied to cheques he could understand it, but in its present form it was a mystery. It was decided to communicate with the chief postmaster, Wellington, and ask him what were the facts of the case.
