SPORTING

NOTES. (By "Flaneur.") The Banker was unlucky at_ Hawera and may make amends at New Plymouth. Tho estate of the late Arthur Oliver, who died in Christchurch last August, was proved at £2OOO, states an exchange. Tho Palmorston North-owned Birthmark figures in the Trial Plates at the Masterton B-C. meeting. The names of the locally-trained Pantlcr and Master Sarto appear in the list of nominations for the Nelson J.C. meeting. The veteran 'chaser Oakleigh and Gambler's Gold have been placed in work again by the Ellerslie trainer, C. Coleman. Jubilance, weighted at 8.0, should take some settling in the Berwick Handicap, to bo run at the Dunedin meeting. J. T. Jamieson will be represented at the New Plymouth meeting by Spoony, Gold Acre,* Ring tho Bell, Drolatique and Dal Eaton. Mr S. Cleaver, owner of Passin' Through, has purchased the stables near the Hawera racecourse recently in charge of J. Fryer. Landslide, Stork and Muraahi are nicely placed in tho Taranaki Cup, while the same may be said of Civility, Pouma and Rational in tho Flying Handicap. On the Riccarton tracks the other morning Gloaming gave Haze a start over six furlongs, and it was only an exercise gallop tor The Welkin gelding to catch his stable-mate.

Cold Steel, Muraahi and Sunart, who finished in that order in the placings in the Wanganui Cup last season, are among those listed for tho forthcoming Cup contest.

The Taranaki trainer, E. Murtagh, has two very useful hurdlers, To Kawa and Erie, in his stable, and both these animals can be relied upon to make jumping events interesting in the near future.

Mrs W. Graham, of New Plymouth, recently- completed the purchase of Rata (Potoa—Chime). The price paid, it is said, was 500 guineas. Bala will be trained by E. George, the New Plymouth mentor.

Anthem, who ran second to Oration at the Egmont meeting, is a three-year-old filly by Royal Canopy—Psalmist, and was imported from England by Mr Y\ Riddiford. It is stated that she shows a lot of pace on the traacks.

Mr J. Paterson claims a double string to his bow in the Taranaki Cup with Surveyor and Pelham. The latter won a couple of hack races at the Trentham meeting, and the manner in which he acquitted himself formed the subject of some eulogy by those who witnessed his winning feats.

! Stork's win in the Egmont Cup and Oration's success placed Mr Newton King at the head of tho winning owners at tho Egmont Pacing Club's meeting with £755, while Pouma's double win places Mr A. W. Budge next with £520. Messrs S. Tapp and C. P. Nash headed tho others with £4OO and £370 respectively.

' The following were the successful jockeys and trainers at the Egmont fixture:—H. Gray, R. Reed and L. A. Pine each three winners, H. Ryder and M. Gray two, and E. Keesing, H. Wiggins and W. Jones one each. Trainers: E. George, F. Higgott, J. F. Butler and J. Hughes each led in two winners, and T. Hennessv, W. F. Mantle, G W. New, W. Pino, F. J. Tutchen, H. D. McPhee, 0. Cox and J. W. Andorton one each.

Bondi, a two-year-old by Boniform from Secret Link, is regarded by Australian critics as sure to make good. He was bred by Mr lan Duncan, and sold at 1600 guineas as a yearling. Another very likely sort 'is said to Iks Phocion, by Boniform from Esther. Oration, who won the Maiden at the Egmont meeting, is said to be capable of mustering up a lot of pace, and should bo heard of again to advantage before the season is far advanced. Oration was purchased a few weeks ago by Mr Newton King for 550 guineas, and not 950 guineas as previously recorded. A very smart sprinter was seen out at the Egmont meeting in Pouma, a chestnut marc by Compfire—Martingale. Sho won well on the first day, and on the second made no race of the Waimato Flying. Pouma, however, is a bit on tho small side and weight may trouble her. Though Carbine's name has now completely disappeared from the winning sires'"list in England, his name is still found in another quarter—that devoted to winning grandsires. In England last year eight daughters of Carbine claimed twelve winners, the stake money credited to them being £8569. Following are the leading sires of the present season up to date:—Solferino (49 winners of place money), £16,8134, Kilbronev (40) £11,740, Absurd (33) £11,304, Polvdamon (16) £792J, Hymettus (12) £7157, Lucullus (19) £6885, Boniform (28) £6123, Nassau (17) £5493J, Quin Abbey (19) £5373.

Word comes from Bulls of the death of the brood mare Bill, who died at Rata .last week. Bred by Mr H. McManaway in 1907, she was a daughter of San Fran and Spring, by Quilt — Brook, by Torpedo—Rivulet, by Javeline —Cascade. Rill won a number of good races, including the First Hawera Stakes (1911).

At the monthly meeting of the. stewards of the Masterton Racing Club four applications were received for the position of starter to fill tho place of Mr C. O'Connor, who was unable to fulfil his engagement due to the alteration of the date of tho meeting. Mr R. Darley, of Takapau, was selected at a fee not to exceed 15 guineas.

Nassau is getting excellent opportunities at the Kia Ura stud in New South Wales. No fewer than 33 of Mr Percy Miller's brood marts were mated with him during the season, this being a greater number than visited the other stallions at Mr Miller's stud, which include tho imported horses Sarchedon, Magpie, Saltash, Crowdennis and Demosthenes. During the season 100 foals were produced at this stud.

The Marton Jockey Club is now pushing ahead rapidly with the formation of the new course, and trainers in those parts will have to find new training trucks lor the next twelve months. It is possible that ,1. Morris and T. Coleman will shift their teams to Bulls, while L. Knapp will go to Feilding. The Marton spring and Bungit ikei Hunt meetings will probably be held at Feilding this year.

Tho following nominations have been received for the principal events at the Nelson races:—Nelson Cup,of 500 sovs, 1} miles: Quest, Jubilance, Pantler, Tresham, Happy Days, Fillette, Callburn, Kalakaua, Printemps t Zero Hour, Viewpoint, Stream, Prosperity, Master Sandstone, Monoxide, Irapuka, Gluement, Prince Ferouz. Stewards' Handicap, of 250 sovs, 6 furlongs: Jubilance, Megalo, Ilka, Big Push, ( The Lamb, Beaumont, Gardenia, Crown Star, Jackaroo, Piccaninny, Kuia, Master Sandstone, Monoxide, Pink Rose, Willow, Wai, Paphian.

The three-year-old pacing colt Native Prince (says the Sydney Sportsman) put up a remarkable performance in the first heat of the Tramway Handicap (12 furlongs) at the last meeting at Epping. Native Prince skipped at the start and gave his 12 opponents half a furlong start. He seemed to be hopelessly beaten and so fur behind that one 'backer who had taken bets about him tore up his tickets. Native Prince went to the front before entering on the third lap (half-mile) and won by half a length from Cherry Child (O'Brien) in 3min 39sec. Native Prince won a race at Auckland early in the season, then he returned to Sydney a tow weeks ago. Native Prince is engaged in the Derby Thousand at Melbourne in March.

Mr J. M. Cameron was in luck when he took a holiday trip back to New Zealand about a couple of years ago (writes "Pilot" in the Sydney Referee). He did not anticipate securing something equivalent to a good gold mmo at a low figure, but he got The Hawk for 700 guineas and contingencies. Before ho left New Zealand he ran the Martian. gelding twice, and a second and a first returned him £750 in stakes. The Hawke's first run in Australia was in the Warwick Stakes, won by Sunburst, at Bundwiek, and Ins platings in Australia have be«n as under-—Second TattersalPs Tramway Handicap £l2O, first Rosehill Hill Stakes £790, first Caulfield St. George Stakes £7so| first Caulfield Futurity £2600, first Essondon Stakes £llOB, first C. M. Lloyd Stakes £IO3B. third Rosehill Bawson Stakes £SO, third Rosehill Hill Stakes £75, first Caulfield Stakes £llOO, second Cantala Stakes (disq.) second Linlithgow Stakes £3OO, first Moorefield Hurstvillc Stakes £560, first Challenge Stakes £1326; total £9867. Added to the £750 he earned for him in New Zealand The Hawke has returned his present owner £10,617, and he is not yet at the end of his tether. The Hawke's win in the Challenge Stakes at Bandwick on January 24 equalled anything previously done by him in his sprinting line. In New Zealand as a three-year-old he won a six furlongs race with 9.2 in 1.9 4-5, but that was at Trontliam (Wellington), a track particularly favourable to fast time at the distance named. On January 24, with 10.3, he cut out six furlongs in 1.112- and did it so easily as to make it questionable whether lie was ever better. POVERTY BAY ACCEPTANCES. P«r Preis Association.
