FOXTON. Borough council. (From Our Own Correspondent.) Tho monthly meeting of tho Ftneton Borough Council was held on Monday night, the Mayor, Mr John Chrystall, presiding. It was reported that tho aliiount of gas manufactured during the month of December was 454,500 cubio feet. During the month 339,300 feet was used by consumers, 3500 feet in street lamps, and 26,000 feec at tho works. The receipts from tho gas department for the month totalled £293 13s 6d. The treasurer's statement showed that during tho month of January the sum of £699 6s 7d was received and placed to tho credit of the following accounts: Cemetery £4 7s 6d, drainage connection loan £5 13s sd, district fund £689 5s Bd. Tho road foreman reported that during tho past month the following work had been engaged in by tho road staff: —Completing the asphalting of Park stroet footpath, repairing broken surfaced of central portion of Main street with tar and Belmont chips, tar sealing Johnston street, from Union street to Cook street and from Coloy street to Avenue road, trimming in loose metal on various roads, patching with metal and clinker Sandon road and Union street and general maintenance. They had continued the work of tar sealing Russell street and had got just beyond Thyme street. If would be a good thing if they wero able to continue right up to tho park cutting, but they had now only twenty barrels of ta.r in hand and they would need to give tho work already dono another coating at an early date to. ensure it being of lasting benefit. Tho water and drainage report showed that during tho month tho following work had been carried out: Two householders had been connected with tho high pressure water supply and a new sewerage drain laid into the lire station. Tho electric motor had been installed in tho pump houso and it was working satisfactorily. The automatic cut-out had still to be installed.

It was decided to procure the tar necessary for completing tho tar sealing of Russell street.

Mr Dowries, gas manager, was granted two weeks, leave of absence, Mr Carey taking charge in the meantime. It was ■decided that the action of the Mayor and town clerk in accepting an offer for grazed earthenware pipes be endorsed and that an order bo placed for £l5O worth of pipes; the first delivery to be Ist March, and payment to be made after 31st March or as soon as the money comes to hand. A letter was received from the chairman of the No. 9 Main Highways Board regarding a boundary road between the county and the borough stating that the road in question, being under the control of the borough is not a main highway. The borough ho presumed, in the past received a small subsidy from the- county towards the cost of maintenance of this road, and the Main Highways Act had no effect on the matter. The proper course for the borough appeared to be to ask the county to continue its contribution towards the cost of upkeep. SHANNON BRIDGE. The Mayor reported on the conference Bf local bodies held last week to discuss matters in connection with the Shannon bridge. He said that ho was disappointed witli tho Mauawatu County Council's action fn that connection. A resolution had been carried at the conference recommending that a new bridge be erected at. a cost of between £IB,OOO and £22,000, that the old bridgo bo dono away with and that the punt bo used until the new bridge is lirectud. The new bridge would not bo completed for at least two to three years. Much an antidiluvian method of crossing thu river was ridiculous. Tho Main Highways Board had been prepared to pay one-third of tho cost of repairing the old bridgo (£15,000) but in spite of this fact tho matter of reconstruction had been discarded. Foxton would have to pay its allocation in connection with the new bridgo and interest and sinking fund on the old bridge. Tho motion was in direct defiwice of tho settlers on both sides of the river, who wanted the bridge repaired. After a. short discussion the mutter was dropped, it being considered that nothing further could be done. BUNNYTHORPE. (From Our Own Correspondent).
