EASTERN FLEET
NECESSITY IN FUTURE. , CONCERN OF WHOLE EMPIRE. [By Electric Telegraph .—Copyright.] Received February 10, 9.5 a.m. LONDON, Feb. 8. The Daily Express's naval critic, commenting on the Singapore Conference to be held on February 21st, argues that as at present there is no conceivable dangnr in the Atlantic, it would bo strategically valuablo either to station the Atlantic fleet in tho viators between Hong-Kong, Sydney and Trincomalee, or, alternatively, send them thither on a long training cruiso. This would impress Oriental opinion and show the Australian public tho character of the ships for which docking facilities are required in Australia. Tho comment concludes: "A British Imperial Eastern fleet is unquestionably a necessity in tho future. Its formation and success depend on factors with which the Homo authorities and taxpayers are only partly concerned. It will ultimately be e joint concern of the Various units of tho Empire"—A. and N.Z. cable.
