MAYORAL CHAIN.

SPLENDID PIECE OF WORK. TO BE PRESENTED TO-MORROW. The mayoral chain to be presented to the municipality to-morrow afternoon by the past Mayors of fnlmerston North is a splendid specimen of tho jeweller's art. Mention has already been made in the "Standard" of the fact that the movement for its manufacture and presentation was originated by Mr R. Edwards, and that the links comprising tho emblem of office will bear tho names of former chief magistrates of the borough. A "Standard" reporter was this morning shown the chain. In general design it is of tho conventional type and contains fifteen heavy gold*pieces each linked to the other with double bars of New Zealand greenstone. The names of the past Mayors are each inscribed on a separate gold shield with well-executed embellishment)! in an oval Siltline. Tho pendant of the chain is a massive solid gold piece with tho date of the first Mayoralty, 1877, on a background of blue, inlaid enamel. Below this again is appended a gold scroll with blue enamel background and "Pulmerston North" lettered prominently thereon. The whole is a striking piece of work worthy of tho municipality and the donors, and its cost was stated to tho reporter to hav» approached £IOO.
