SECRETS OF THE ATOM.
TWO REMARKABLE RESULTS. AN UNEXPLAINED ENERGY. LONDON, Dec. 17. A few weeks ago a great deal of publicity was given to the experiments being carried out by Dr. J. F. Wall at Sheffield University with the object of splitting tho atom. A further statement was made by Professor Wall last week which has revived interest in tho matter.
Professor Wall emphasises the point that no violent manifestation ot released energy was in the least degree probable as the result of these experiments, but added that the experiments hod so far yielded two distinct, definite and remarkable results, a completely satisfactory explanation of which had not yet been obtained. The first of these results is that currents are being produced which are immensely greater than those which could have been anticipated from calculations based on the normally known characteristics of the circuit employed. An adequate explanation of this phenomenon would be obtained if some hitherto unrealised source of energy were being released. This suggestion is given with all reserve, but it is considered that such an explanation is a possible one. The second result obtained, which is equally remarkable, is that the magnetic quality of steel "which has been submitted to the intense magnetic/fields produced has undergone a definite change, namely, the magnetic quality has appreciably improved. This change in the magnetic quality could be accounted for on the basis of a change in the structure of the steel which would permit of tho release of some hitherto unrealised source of energy. The power supplied to the apparatus is now being doubled, and it is expected that this increased energy will permit of an exhaustive examination of these phenomena.
