TOTALISATOR INVESTMENTS. t CLUBS MAY GET LARGER SHARE. When replying to a deputation from the Taranaki Jockey Club and Taranaki Trotting Club at New Plymouth on Saturday night, tho Hon. R. F. Bollard, Minister of Internal Affairs, said it was intended next session to reintroduce the clause dealing with the percentage of tho totalistor receipts taken by tho Government. At present tho Go\ermuont took 2£ per cent, of tho receipts, but he thought, and Mr Massoy agreed with hirrfc that tho Government should take only lj per cent, and that tho other li per cent, should bo handed to tho racing clubs to be used on grounds improvements. A clause to this effect had been introduced in the Finance Bill last session, but after what had happened with tho Gaming Bill tho position had not been forced. Mr Bollard said that tho clause would be put in a bill next session, and he did not think there would be any trouble about it. Tho adoption of the proposal would be of very great assistance to tiio clubs. There was 0110 tiling he did not liko and that was the nienaco the bookmaker had become to tho Dominion. Tho bookmaker was a very difficult man to suppress. They might not be able to eliminate him altogether but ho thought it was possible to push him well to one side. Instead of putting money on with a bookmaker, investors should have the privilege of being able to wire money to tho totalisator. He was in favour of that and also of tho publication of dividends. Mr Bollard also thovight that the clubs should be able to run the "double totes." Reference was made to the practice of some bookmakers in giving credit to youthful backers who, when they lost, wore strongly tempted to steal. Tho number of bookmakers' agents carrying on in the workshops, offices and factories also made tho menace more dangorous. "In spite of what some ungenerous critics have said," remarked the Hon. R. F. 80l-

lard at Waverley on Tuesday, "the Racing and Trotting Conferences arc composed of a body of men that have dono much to lift up the standard of racing in New Zealand and have made it tho cleanest and best conducted in the world. That is a largo statement to make, but since I have had dealings with those two authorities I know what they have done. There aro somo matters in which I do not see eye to eyo with tho conferences, but wo work amicably together, and I am sure that before very long wo will bo in total agreement. I have had tho greatest assistance from them in settling certain perplexities that required adjustment." The following aro tho nominations for the principal events on tho first day of the Wanganui J.C. meeting:—Wanganui Cup, 13 miles.— Martulla, Cold Steel, Muraahi, Kilfaire, Gold Jacket, Glen Canny, Avola, Malatour, Bright Ejes, Tho Banker, Sunart, Cloasanta, Morry Day, Spoony, Musketoon, Surveyor, Pelham, Stork.
