ST. PAUL'S

WORK OF. RESTORATION. APPEAL MADE FOR FUNDS. LONDON, Jan. 24. Appeals for aid in saving St. Paul's Cathedral are made by Dean Inge, of the Cathedral Chapter, and by the Lord Mayor of London. Dean Inge says: "I am delighted to hear that an appeal for our cathedral is to be made in Australia and New Zealand. We are proud to think ourselves the central Church, not only of London, but of the British Empire, and as such we conducted memorial services during the Great War for all sections of the Imperial Forces. Of these none was more impressive than the Australian and New Zealand memorial service when we commemorated the devotion of those whom the Germans regarded as the most formidable fighters whom they encountered. We are glad to think that in peace also visitors from Australia and New Zealand feel at home in St. Paul's, which the present effort will, as we hope, make secure for a long time to come." Sir Alfred Bower, Lord Mayor of London, sends the following message: ''l cordially commend to the peoples of Australia and New Zealand the appeal about to be made to contribute to the St. Paul's Preservation Fund. The need is urgent. St. Paul's deservedly has come to bo known as the Cathedral of the Empire. I am confident that both the Dominions will cooperate as far as lies in their power to'preserve it both for themselves and future generations of the Empire." The appeal hitherto has met with good response, and £I4U,QOO, which experts estimated as the minimum necessary for the emergency work, has been assured through the Times, which never conducted a national appeal with greater force or success. But a much larger sum is required before it will be possible safely to stabilise the dome, and consequently the Times appeal remains open.

It was natural to look to the city first for immediate needs, and the city provided the vast bulk of the subscriptions. The appeal is now being extended to the whole country and supplementary funds will include all Loni don municipalities, which promised to follow the city's lead. Every parish is expected to contribute a special Sunday offering. SOME HANDSOME CONTRIBUTIONS. Some of the larger contributions to the fund have been: —City of London Corporation, £5260; London Stock Exchange, and Lord Hambledon, £SOOO each j Bank of England, £2500; Lloyd's Underwriters', £2000; Barclay's, Midland, Lloyd's, Provincial and Westminster Banks, Baring Bros., Rothschild's, Schroeder's, Lazard Bros., Imperial Tobacco Company, Prudential Insurance Company, Underground Railways Coy., Anglo-American Oil Company, Ltd., Shell Transport and Trading Company, Limited, Ralli Bros., £IO2O each; The Times, Punch, News of the World, the Mercers' Company, the Goldsmiths' Company, Hudson. A large proportion of the individual subscriptions has been made in half-crowns, shillings and sixpences. SUBSCRIPTIONS RECEIVED. LONDON, Feb. 5.
