A London cable announces tfie death of Lord Doverdftle. He started life as w errand boy in a paper mill. His Grace Archbishop Redwood 'was a visitor to Palmerston North yesterday Kid was the guest of Father MacManua. An Auckland paper records the death, which took place on Sunday, of Mr George Selwyn Goldsbro' a well-known architect. The late Mr Goidsbro' was the younge.'t son of the late Dr. C. F. Goidsbro', who was a very well-known medical man in Auckland's early days. Sir George and Lady Elliot, who have been Absent from the Dominion for about 10 months, reached Sydney from London on Friday, having travelled via India, Singapore and Java. They have booked passage* by the Maheno, ivhioii is due :in Auckland this week. Mr T. R. Lees, of Pabneriiton North, managing trustee of {he N«.w Zealand Sheepowners' Acknowledgment of Debt to British Seamen Fund | is at present in Wellington in connection with tho arrival there of a further number of boys to go into training at Flock House. Brigadier Toomer, Oolonel Carmichael and Ensign Huston, of the Salvation Army, were passengers by the south-bound Main Trunk express this momin,j. They are to attend a conference of divisional commanders to be held in Wellington and discuss with Commissioner Hoggard the impending changes in the field officers. The death of a veteran of the Burmese and South African Wars,, Mr William Fidler, aged 62 years, occurred at tho Auckland Hospital the other day. Mr Fidler was bora in Surrey, England, and in 1883, at the age of 20, he enlisted in the Second Queen's Regiment and was drafted to India in the following year. He went through the Burmese campaign from 1885 to 1889, and afterwards he was stationed at various places in India until 1896, when he was discharged. At the outbreak of the South African War in 1899 he enlisted in the Northern Reserve, but later served with the R.A.M.C. He returned to England at tho end of the war, and came to New Zealand in 1913, working chiefly in the Wairarapa district.
