SPORTING

NOTES, (Notes by "Flaneur.") The time, 3.34, taken for the Auckland Cup, is the slowest since Zimmerman won in 1907, when he covered the distance in 3.36 2-5. The chestnut mare Crossfire, who won a race at the Manawatu meeting, and secured place honours at Marton. has been in the care of A. J. Shearsby for the past few weeks.

An Auckland writer states that the strong race exacted from Royal Divorce in tho Auckland Cup evidently left its mark on the English horse, for he was not again saen at tho meeting.

At the Canterbury Park's Trotting Club's meeting J. J. Kennerley headed the list with £865, the next throe highest being A. H. Fobcs £660, M. Moir £499 and G. \V. Dransfield £315.

The English-bred Merit, who raced disappointingly at Feilding and Woodville, had an easy win in the Bowen Handicap at Ellerslie. and further success can hardly fail to come the way of Mr ( Riddiford's importation.

Te Kara, owing to kicking habits, was not drawn for in positions at the post_ in the Auckland Cup, but was stood behind the field. The stewards of the Auckland Racing Club decided on this at the previous meeting.

Miss Micky, who broke a leg while competing in a hurdle race at the recent Stratford meeting, and had to be destroyed, was owned by Mr E. Fryer, of Hawera. An enquiry held subsequently, showed that it was purely an accidental occurrence.

The following were the respective sums invested on the totalisator in connection with the four leading events decided at the Auckland Racing Club's recent summer meting: Auckland Cup. £23,570 10s; Great Northern Derby, £17,161; A.R.C. Handicap, £18,888; Grandstand Handicap, £15,246 10s.

Brigadier Bill, who is owned by Mr Jas. Bull, won the New Year Hack at the recent Marton meeting in the easiest possible style. As ho is a strOngly-mrade animal, and knows how to jump, the son of All Red—Te Hau can be ticked off to later on gain high honours as a hurdler.

Word is to hand from Melbourne that j. Cameron has decided not to take either The Hawk or Egyptian Flower to New Zealand. In this he was influenced by

the announcement that the Wellington Racing Club proposes cutting the Waterloo Plate out of its summer programme. It was intended to run The Hawk in that race.

Pinna was recently schooled over hurdles at Awapuni and jumped well for a beginner.

The successes of Bonny Rill in both hurdlo events at Marton were popular, the daughter of Bonifonn being owned by Mr J. McDonell, a steward of the club. The favourite in the First Hack Hurdles, Waloelca Jack, was hampered by the heavy going, and ho also rapped one of the hurdles hard.

Seventeen jockeys secured a place on the winning list at tho Auckland R.C. meeting, R. Reed, H. Gray, W. Bagby and B. Rosen being equal for first place, each with four successes; J. O'Shea, W. H. Jones, P. Waddell, W. Ryan two wins, and F. C. Porter, A. Reed, R. Bagby, 11. Goldfinch, J. Mcßae, G. Holland, E. Twohey, R. Thompson and A. McDonald one win apiece.

The contest for the Auckland Racing Club Handicap ended in a thrilling finish, Muraahi, putting in a great run over the last half-mile and just getting up in time to win by a head from Stork and Gold Jacket, whom tho judge was unable to separate. With Hipo's victory in the Newmarket Handicap, Muraahi's win completed a verv satisfactory double for Taranaki. Hector Gray piloted both winners.

It is probable the totalisator will be installed on Irish racecourses before those of England. Colonel McCnbe, manager of the Mallow racecourse, recently announced that a double-event totalisator would be given a trial there, and if the results were satisfactory he would initiate tho full system customary on Continent.il racecourses. Strike talk on the part of some of the bookmakers was, in a measure, responsible for Col. McCabe's determination.

The Bulls-owned Euphonium followed up his Manawatu success by easily accounting for the opposition in the Juvenile Hack Handicap at the Stratford meeting. Mr Gaisford, however, did not have any luck at the New Plymouth meeting, where Koauau was unable to compete owing to having sustained a bruised shoulder, while Equitable fell in the Hurdle Race on the second dav after receiving, it is said, a very rough passage. The fall must have affected him, for he never threatened danger in the Second Hurdles at Marton.

The Awapuni-trained Bullford was taken to the Auckland meeting. On the first day he fell, and on the second day secured third honours. In the New Year Hurdles, on tho concluding day, ho went out a solid favourite. Before the field had gone half a milo he was in front and never afterwards lost his position, though he made one faulty jump. Bullford gave proof of his quality at Riccarton last August, and his easy win the above-men-tioned event stamps him as a very useful hurdler.

Mr F. C. Thomas, well-known as the racing and trotting editor of the Christchurch Sun, under the pen-name of "Templar," since the paper was established, is retiring from the service of the Canterbury Publishing Co., Ltd. On tho eve of his retirement he was presented, by his colleagues and by original members'-, of the staff in other departments, with a spirit flask, a gold-mounted tobacco-pouch, and a pipe and case. Mr C. A. Marris, associate editor of the Sun, expressed the gathering's hopes for' Mr Thomas's prosperity and happiness in the future.

Tho nominations for the three days of the Wellington summer mooting are well up to tho average, boing only 19 less than for the corresponding meeting last year, tho total being 688, as against 707. Both islands are well represented. The Wellington Cup has drawn a field of 25 horses representing the best class, of handicap performers in training. Last year's field does not include tho Auckland Cup winner Te Kara, but tho Now Zealand Cup winner Sunart is there, also the plated horses in both events, and the dual Derby winner Count Cavour. He and Quiscent are tho only three-year-olds engaged.
