MELBOURNE'S RAINFALL
FOURTH HEAVIEST RECORDED. MELBOURNE Dec. 27. This year's rainfall in Melbourne,, is the fourth heaviest recorded, and the third heaviest authenticated. Yesterday 55 points of rain fell in the metropolitan area, bringing the year's total to 3645 points. In 1911 3661 points were, recorded, and in 1916 3804 points. In 1849 4425 points were said to have fallen, but this record is not -authenticated. For the past 68 years the average is 2561, so that, in view of the fact that 1911, 1916 and 1923 are the highest authenticated rainfalls, there would seem to be something in the grumblers' contention that Melbourne is getting wetter and wetter. It is interesting to note that Sydney's rainfall for 1924—up to 9 a.m. yesterday—was 3661 points—l 6 points more than Melbourne. For the corresponding period of last year 3695 points of rain were recorded in Sydney. Melbourne, therefore, has little to grumble about.
