CHESS TOURNEY

WON BY PURDY. 17-YEAR-OLD AUSTRALIAN. Per Press Association. NELSON, Jan. 6, The chess championship was won by Purdy. the 17-year-old Australian. In the final rounds Hicks met Severne. Hicks played the Scotch game and the opening and the middle game vvere very even and no risks were taken until tho end of the game when Severne put his queen out of play to bring in another line of attack. Hicks had a good opening and forced the attack and won the game. In tho match between Cole and Anderson, in tho Queen's Gambia played by Cole, Anderson lost two pawns. A long struggle took place. Anderson being able to stop the advance' of Cole's extra pawns. When Cole set lip an attack upon Anderson's king ho checkmated Anderson in # six moves. The Vuuglian versus Dodds match was a Queen's Pawn game in which Dodds obtained the passed pawn but gave up two minor pieces for the rook. Vuughan took up attack and by some very bright play forced Dodds to resign. Moir'v. Kolling—ln a Karo Conn opening, Aioir got a very strong advanced pawn centre and Kelling cramped his position. In the end of the game Moir brought up a fierce attack and checking with advanced pawn threatened checkmate in two or three moves. Kelling resigned. Gyles v. Purdy sa.w an unusual development—a Queen's Pawn opening iu which Purdy soon had un attack. Gyles made weak moves which Purdy wu* quick to take advantage of. In a lively struggle Purdy won two pawns but missed winning the bishop. Gyles'l position was hopeless and Purdy wns able to win two more pawns and force an exchange of pieces. Gyles resigned. .
