SUGGESTED REMOVAL. "SLIGHT ON VICTORIA." [By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.] Received January d, 9.15 a.m. LONDON, Jan. 5. Strong protests have been raised against tho proposed removal of the statue of Queen Victoria from the Prince's Chamber in the House of Lords in order to make room for a war memorial.
"A' real slight to the memory of the Great Queen," is how Lord Beauchamp describes it in a letter to the Times. He points out that the statue was paid for out of public funds and is a national possession. He t suggests that the matter should be referred to a fine arts commission.
Sir Bertram MacKennal and Sir Hamo Thornycroft similarly protest. Sir Bertram Mackennal declares that some other place must be found for the Houpe of Lords memorial, while Sir Hamo .Thornycroft asks: "li statues of Queen Victoria are to be removed, what statues of the past are safe and where is this vandalism to endP" — Times.
