The death occurred at Thames of Mrs Sarah Helen Way, relict of the late Mr George Way, aged 90 years. Mrs Way arrived at Auckland in the ship Resolute in 1865, and went to Thames in 1869. She had resided there for the greater purt of the time on a farm on tho coast road. The death is announced of Mrs Margaret Pitkethlev, an old identity of Auckland. She and her husband were among the early pioneers of that city, arriving 60 years ago from Scotland on Christmas Day, by the ship Helen Lee. Her husband predeceased her by nine years and eleven months. She is survived by her two sons and two daughters. She had been a resident of Newton since 1868. Those interested in the career of New Zealand artists overseas will be pleased to learn that Miss Mabelle Esquilant, after nearly two years’ study abroad (in Rom® with Signor Martino, and more recently in London under Spencer Clay), has been fortunate enough to win Madame Ada Crossley’s admiration and keen interest. The famous songstress considers that Miss Equilant has an exceptionally beautiful voice, and regards her as a vocalist of really great promise. Through Madame Crossley’s good offices, an audition was arranged with Mr Henry Mills (Director of the National Sunday League concerts), and as a result Miss Esquilant was engaged for a concert on December 14, with West End engagements to follow in tho New Year. “BE LOYAL.” QUEEN’S CHEERFUL MESSAGE. “Always be cheerful and make tho best of things; do what is right, and, whatever may be your task, do your best in it. Remember that life is made up of loyalty —loyalty to your friends; loyalty to things beautiful and good; loyalty to the country in which you live; loyalty to your King; and, above all—for that holds all the other loyalties together—loyalty to God. I shall always think of you. _ God bless and keep you!” These beautiful sentiments were expressed by the Queen, in a special message of Christmas greetings, to a contingent of 52 Barnardo girls, which arrived at Sydney from London the other day by the liner Sophocles.
