SPORTING

NOTES. (By Flaneur.) The Taranaki-owned Te Kawa is reported to be a smart hurdler. Les. Lewer has left Mr J. B. Gaisford’s stable and returned to Waverley. Euphonium, now at Hawera, will;accompany 0. Cox’s team to Awapuni. Equitable and Ivoauau, who will fulfill New Plymouth and Marton engagements, are in good racing fettle. Projector is looking bright and well, and will most likely be put into training shortly. E. Warner, who had three nbs broken as the result of his fall at Takapuna, has made a speedy recovery. Mr A. McDonald has decided to send Killocra to Auckland for the Great Northern Derby. Arch Salute, who has raced consistently while in the care of the Woodville trainer, H. Connop, is to be given a spell. . Word comes from Marton that Brigadier Bill and Ruby Ring are doing all that is required of them on the tracks. Sunart is a very strong order for the Manawatu Cup, but Avola, Te Kura and Merry Singer can be relied on to make the contest interesting. Sling Camp, The Emperor, Bulford, Santiago and Kanaka are well forward in condition. Santiago and Sling Camp should be among the early hurdle winners. ... ■Pan tier, Megalo, Ben mil re, Santomo, Birthmark, Rangimoana and Snatcher go through work on the Awapuni tracks in good style, and should show up well in forthcoming engagements. Polonett, by his win in the Te Awamutu Cup, drew still further attention to- his Auckland Cup prospects. Ho lias now won four races on end, and each time, from all accounts, ho has been staving well. P. Raynor, the Wanganui jockey, who has not been riding for some time owing to his weight, is again in form, and will ride at. the forthcoming meetings at New Plymouth and Stratford. He lias taken up permanent residence at Hawera. . Royal Blood is favourite in Auckland for the Railway Handicap, those in most demand in the Cup being Dolonett, Gold Light, Musketoon and Muriialii. Royal Divorce, who has the luxurious impost of 7.7, may trouble the more fancied candidates. Plain Sailing, the half-sister by Warplane to Wassail, is going along well in her rehearsals at Hastings. She is under the tuition of V. H. Collelo, and her owner, Mr R. H. Peacock, of Waipulcurau, intends that she will make her debut in the Nursery Handicap at Waipukurau. The Woodville Jockey Club contemplates changing the position of the judge’s box to a position similar to that now in use at Ricearton and Trent, ham, while the Munawatu Ilacing Club has decided to shift its box back 30ft from its present position and to raise it six feet higher. The value of the skull cap, the use of which •is now made compulsory at trotting- meetings, was fully proved at the ,recent New Brighton meeting. When Bon Sonty came to grief in the New Brighton Trotting Handicap, his driver, T. Annett, was thrown on his head, but the skull cap saved him from being injured. The Australian jockey Myles Connell is returning to Australia by the steamer Runic, which left London last week. He is uncertain whether he will return to the saddle. “It all depends on my weight when I reach Adelaide,” lie said. “At present I am nearly lOst, and if I can reduce my weight without wasting 1 may be tempted to ride again. I only require to ride 21 winners to complete 1100 winning rides.” At Ricearton on Tuesday morning G. Murray-Aynsley worked his Auckland candidates the reverse way. Limelight covered a mile and a quarter in 2.8. She carried G. Young, and finished full of running, registering a very attractive performance. Count Cnvour and Tarleton travelled a milo the reverse way. Count Cavour appeared to be going a trifle better than his companion all through, and he finished up slightly in front, the time being 1.43. It was a useful effort, particularly on the part of Count Cavour. Mr J. R. McKenzie has received a letter from the- West Australian Trotting Club, inviting him to send his pacer Acron to Perth in March to compete in a series of races, over one mile and a quarter, one mile and a half and two miles, for the Australian and New Zealand championship. Provided satisfactory arrangements, can be made, it is probable that Mr McKenzie will accede to the request and send Acron to measure strides with the best Australian horse in this contest. In the meantime, an Australian buyer is negotiating for the purchase of Acron, but it is certain that Mr McKenzie would require a big sum as an inducement to part with his champion. It is 15 years.since All Red won his second Auckland Cup under 9.1, and no horse has been able to win the race since carrying more than 8.9, while on only three other occasions in the whole history of the event have horses carrying over 9.0 been successful. Nelson, who won three years in succession, carried 9.8 and 9.12 in his last two victories in 1886 and 1887, the race at tlie period being run over two miles and a-quarter. It was not till 1903 that Wairiki won under 9.8 over tile present course of two miles. The re*cords, therefore, says a northern writer, are against the prospects this year of Gold Light and Loughrea, who have been called upon to carry 9.7 and 9.5 respectively.

Wilson junr., and the jockey, A. H. Wilson, was dismissed by' the Racing; Conference by tho appeal judges. Sir George Clifford, Messrs John Grigg, and G. N. McLean, and the appellant’s deposit was forfeited. In the course of their judgment, the judges say; “Tho evidence of responsible eye-witnesses of tho two races is in agreement as to tho wilful prevention of Roseday from doing himself justice in the Gore Cup. Confirmation of their opinion is derived from his clearing way in that race from Kerb, his stable, companion and from the different style of riding adopted on him on tho second day. We cannot dissociate tho owner of Roseday from the tactics pursued in the running of the horses from Wilson’s stable on this occasion.” The appeals of D. P. and A. H. Wilson were then withdrawn.
