LARGER SENTENCE DESIRED. WHAT PRISONERS EARN. [By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright,] Received December 20, 8.45 a.m. SYDNEV, Dec. 20. A man named Jackson, who was convicted on a series of charges of thefts of workmen’s tools, and who was sentenced to a year’s imprisonment, requested the judge to declare him an habitual criminal, thereby securing a longer sentence. The Crown Prosecutor stated that Jackson three or four years spent . in gaol would remove him -from temptation, give him an opportunity to reform, and enable him to start life again with the money, which was estimated at £3OO earned during imprisonment. The Judge, remarking on the largeness of tho sum, said that when tho amount became generally known they would be having an increase in these applications. Ho granted Jackson’s request.—Press Association.
