NELSON v. PALMERSTON NORTH. NARROW VICTORY FOR VISITORS. The cricket match between the first elevens of Nelson College nhd 'Tile Palmerston North Boj’s’ High School was concluded at the sportsground this morning. The visitors, with an overnight score of 109 runs for the loss of eight wickets, resumed their second innings. By mutual consent a new wicket was prepared, yesterday's being unplayable as a result, of the heavy overnight rain. At 9.45 o’clock James (15) and Muncaster (13), the two not out men, went to the wickets, Smitlie and Gallichan taking up the attack for the home team. Off the former’s first ball he received Muncaster ran a two from a. glance to leg, following it with a single, James playing out the over Quietly. Facing the slow break bowler Mimcostor lifted the first ball he received into tho long field, but it fell clear, a single resulting. Five balls later Gallichan got .Tames Tbw —ll3 —9—ls. Johnson repeated his first innings performance by opening his account with a boundary, but Muncaster brought the innings to a close by retuniibg a simple one to Smillie off the opening ball of his next over... The balance of tho innings liud lasted nine minutes —117 —10 —17. HOME TEAM’S EFFORT.
Lancaster and Pacey were the opening pair for Palmerston North, the side beingfaced with the task of compiling 109 to annex the victory. S. Newman and Sadlier carried the attack for the visitors, a single to each batsman being forthcoming off the latter’s first over, while maidens resulted from Newman’s first two overs. After turning Newman to the square leg boundary Lancaster attempted to repeat the stroke and was beaten —14 —I—6.1—6. Smillie, the incomer, turned the second ball he received to square leg for three and facing Airey, who had relieved Sadlier, drove his second delivery past the howler for a single, Pacey following -suit off tho last hall of the over. The latter batsman brought 20 up by snicking A. Newman, who had relieved his brother at the bottom end, through the 6lips off his last bull. Smillie, who was proving enterprising, brought 20 up by driving A. Newman io the on boundary for four. lie added a single, bringing Pacey facing the bowler and the trandier accounted for him lbw next ball — 31—2—6. Gallichan arrived only to succumb in the same manner with the score unaltered. Norris filled the gap and ran a single from a snick through the slips off the final ball. An uppish stroke towards mid-on brought the same batsman two and Smillie despatched Airey to the stand fenco bringing his total up to 18. At this stage lie had to retire to catch a train, making the telegraph read 40-4-18. Norris swelled his total with two successive twos off A. Newman and McDonald opened his account with a four to the far boundary off Johnson, who hud come on at the top end. A single to leg to Norris off Sadlier brought the half-century up. Off S. Newman’s next over Norris added a four and a single, McDonald contributing a four off tho same over. Sadlier, however, accounted for Norris with the first ball of his next over, clean bowling him. —59-5-14. Hankin opened his account with a lucky snick to fine log, the only contribution forthcoming. James relieved Newman and McDonald added four, two and four off the over. Quick run singles to each batsman followed, leaving 35 to get. in 20 minutes remaining for play. Six leg byes off Sadlier saw the 80 mark passed but Hankin, who did not answer a call from his partner, was run out.—B4-6-5. Tretnewan was the incomer and played out the over. For u period the scoring rate slackened, but facing Airey, Tremewan added a two ami a single, and McDonald followed with four, four, and two before the over closed. Ho was dropped from a simple catch in the slips during tho over. Sadlier, bowling with tho wind behind him, was keeping the batsmen quiet. Airey, who had proved expensive, gave way to S. Newman and tho tmndler got Tremewan arid Spring caught in the field oft’ successive balls, while Seorgie fell l.b.w. next ball, giving the bowler the hat trick. Loot played the fifth ball successfully hut the tmndler boat him with the next—his fourth wicket of the over without cost. From -a winning position the homo team had allowed the victory to pass into tho keeping of the visitors. It was a great fighting finish, McDonald, who was unbeaten with 33 to his credit, making a great effort for his side, but foiled to gain any great support from tho succeeding batsmen. A victory by the narrow margin of nine runs right on time was thus credited the visitors. NELSON.
