WOODVILLE D.J.C. MEETING, WOODVILLE HANDICAP TO TE KURD OETE HANDICAP WON BY KOODOO. . This first clay’s racing of the Woodville District Jockey Cliib Was disposed of yesterday before a large attendance of racegoers. The weather corulitiolis ill the morning were favourable, but shortly after the first race a drizzling rain set iii and continued at intervals throughout the afternoon. It did not affect the track to any great extent, as fast times were recorded in several of the events. The special train from Palmerston North was well patronised, but the same cannot be said of the early morning train from Wellington. .Speculation was brisk, the Hum of £16,378 beiiig put through the machines as against £15,615 for the corresponding day hist year. The fields were large in all file races, the results being in favour of the liandicapper (Mr J. E. llenrys) as not a solitary favourite was successful. Little River went out first choice in the Hack Hurdles, the winner turning up. in the outsider, The Emperor, the dividend being over half a century. The Emperor is trained at Awapuni bv Geo. Caddy. There Was another surprise in the Trial Plate. Of the 19 starlets. the Martian gelding Gauntlet was said to he unbeatable, hut he never threatened danger. The Strand was prominent in the early stages, hut over the business part of the journey Papupongu. Rexau and Peradeniya came through, and in a good run home the last-mentioned won nicely, and rewarded his owner, Mr W. 11. Gaisford, with a very acceptable Peradeniya was well handled by 11. Gray. The good field of 12 was saddled for the Woodville Handicap, ■ ICiUocra, Gaze and Royal Divorce being supported in that order. Passing the stand tlie first time ICiUocra led from Pantler. Royal Divorce, Rouex and Diamond Ring. The lastmentioned ran to the front u little farther on. her nearest attendants being Pantler, Killocru and Royal Divorce. At the distance Te ICuri challenged the leaders, and goiiig on won by a narrow margin from Pantler, who put up a good race. Then followed Diamond Ring, ICillocra. Festivity and Royal Divorce. The stewards held an enquiry into interference in the straight by Te 'lCuri with Diamond Ring, from which ICiUocra also sobered, hut the decision was that the incident was accidental.

Some smart looking juveniles were seen out in the Nursery, though several of them were a hit on the green side. Mimeiic showed a lor. of puce, as also did Gold Box. Tile latter looked u winner entering the straight-, hut failed to stall _otl a challenge in the run home from Lieimus, who was ridden a good race by J. Barry. The Lamb was solidly hacked in the Oete Handicap and looked like pulling his hackers through, but the consistent Koodoo put in a claim at the distance, and gradually wealing the leader down won bv half a length, while Peneus, finishing strongly, got up in time to secure third honours; then followed Quest, who was bracketed with Merit. Megalo was the only withdrawal irom the Flying Hack, Lipsol carrying most money of the 10 runners. An exciting conlest ended in Westbroke getting the verdict bv a narrow margin from Lipsol. who was onlv a neck in front of Bonnie Gold. Mount Murta. who laced well at Feilding. claimed most support in the Borough Welter, hut he ran disappointingly. Imperial Spark pul up u good race, and was only headed by Battle Knight over the coneluding stages. l’Amour finished on in attractive style, and it should not he long before lie gets among the winners. The afternoon’s sporl was brought to a conclusion with the \\ elter Handicap, Xu7.ii being the elect of hackers. rhe latter and Landlord were in the lead early, hut entering the straight Kalakaua run into soooiitl plact*, witli Pronto itnu Black Rock the most prominent of the others. Inside the distance Pronto put in a strong challenge, which Zaza failed to stall oil. being beaten by half a length, with Kalakaua and Black Rock following.
