SLUGGISH RIVER BOARD.

MEETING HELD TO-DAY. A meeting of the Sluggish River Drainage Board was held to-day, Mr It. .Murphy presiding. Others present were: Messrs 11. Wilton, F. J. Foster, J. Ferguson, E. Print and E. Smith (overseer). The overseer reported that a Hood gate on Mr Print's property was cracked badly from the door opening to the top. lie suggested placing spoil at the hack of the gate which would prevent the water from Mowing through. This would lie cheaper than putting in a new structure. As it wiis, the flood water was [lowing on to Mr Print’s property. He itatl inspected other gates and found most of them working satisfactorily, although one at Mr Pearce’s property had been jumbed by a piece of wood which had since been removed. It was decided to hold the mailer of floodgates over until the next meeting owing to the quantity of water in the drains at present. The opinion was expressed that an inspection of the various flood gates by board members would have to be made prior to any work being done. The difficulty of removing an old stop bank from the Oroua river was discussed. It was stated tliut iron rails which had been driven into the soil were proving very hard to move. Explosives had been tried, lint the men had been prevented from continuing their use. by the police. It was decided to approach a contractor with a view of ascertaining the cost of having the work done. It was resolved to inspect tl.ie muin drain and floodgates on December 22nd before calling lenders for cleaning saine. It was decided that notice be sent to property owners on Sluggish creek to clear willows, logs, and other obstructions from same, (torse was stated to be bad in some eases and even where it was not actually blocking the drain, .the seeds were floating downstream and so causing damage further down. ’Poll next meeting of the board was fixed on January 15tli. Accounts amounting to £27 I7s were passed for payment.
