CHILDREN AND DIPHTHERIA. THIRTY PER CENT. INFECTED. CESSNOCIv, Nov. 22. The result of the Schick test for the detection of diphtheria, which has been carried out at the public school by Health Department officials during the week, showed that 30 per cent., who underwent the test were subject to this disease. The injection was made in both arms above the wrists, and subsequent tests indicated the presence of diphtheria germs. Parents of the children found to be subject Lo the disease will now lie asked to permit their children to receive further treatment by their family doctor, who will supply antitoxin, thus rendering the children immune in future.

GRASSHOPPERS IN WEST. A MOTOR MASSACRE. DUB 80, Nov. 26. A motor car that arrived in Dubbo from Trangie to-day presented an interesting sight. Tin) radiutor was literally covered with dead grasshoppers, and tlio entire front of the ear, including the wind-screen, ivus a dirty yellow, due to tho massacre when the car cut its way through tho tliiek mass of insects. The driver said that- the grasshoppers were us thick ns dust for about half a mile, and not only was he obliged lo go slowly, but he bad to get out on one occasion and sweep tho dead hoppers from the radiator, to which, owing to tho heat, tlio victims were stuck fast. Fortunately little damage is being dono by these pests this year, as they did not make their uppearance till the crops were well advanced.
