DROWNING ACCIDENT.

BATHER IN DIFFICULTIES. CARRIED DOWN THE WAIHOU. PAEROA. i)ee. T 4. A young man named John Wesley Reed, aged 20, was drowned in the Wailiou river between Mangaiti and Waitoki, on Wednesday evening. It appears that, with some workmates, he went for a bathe in the river tit a spot where the water is about 20 ieet dee]). He could not swim, and got into difficulties, resulting in his being quickly carried downstream and drowned before help could be given. The body was recovered some distance below the scene of the accident. Deceased was a. native of England, and arrived in New Zealand a few years ago. He was a single man, and as far as is known had no relatives in the Dominion. He was employed on stopbank work by the Public Works Department.

NARROW ESCAPE AT WHANGAREI MAN SEIZED WITH CRAMP. WHANGAREI, Dec. 4. While swimming at Mail - Park pool yesterday evening. Mr .1. R. Gould, a telegraph operator at V Jiangarei, was seized with cram]) and was unable to keep his head above water. There were a number of spectators and swimmevs at the pool, but at first it was not realised that Mr Gould was in difficulties and ho sank several times before Mr W. V. Stevenson, a telegraph messengers, went to his assistance and, with the aid of a young lady swimmer, got him ashore. Artificial respiration was necessary, but Mr Gould suffered no serious after effects and was able to go on duty later in the evening.
