Mr B. Smith had a narrow escape from drowning in Wellington harbour op Saturday afternoon. He went for a row in a single sculling boat, but ii sank. Mr Smith managed to keep afloat with the aid of a pair of sculls, but lie was very much exhausted before be w [ as rescued by those on board the yacht Rona. Portion of Lambtoti Quay in Wellington from the Public Trust Office to the Government Buildings was flooded to a depth of several inches as a result of a torrential downpour of rain which swept, over that city at about 10 a.m. on Saturday. Pedestrian trailie was disorganised for upwards of an hour, and for a considerable period the shops facing the Magistrate’s Court remained completely isolated, with the running waters washing up against the main entrances. 'A ith the exception of a temporary swell in the storm channels near the Bunk of New Zealand corner, Willis street, was not affected, but slight floods occurred in the vicinity of the Town Hall and Mercer street.
