BIG WORKS IN SYDNEY.
BRIDGE AND UNDERGROUND RAILWAY. NEW YORK, Nov. 27. Mr J. J. Bradfield, chief engines for metropolitan railway construction in New South Wales, and his secretary, Miss Butler, have arrived, enroll te to Australia. They are sailing by the Makura on pecember 17. Mr Bradford has finalised the contracts in London for the Sydney bridge and the underground railway work, and has examined the bids for the Sydney University’s war memorial carillon. It is understood that the latter contract will now be given to one of two firms, and the price will be considerably under £20,000. The carillon, which will be among the most unusual in the world, will consist of bells weighing 50 tons, the largest- of which ’aggregate a ton of metal. Miss Butler lias examined several of the most important American bridges, including that at Hellgute, over which sho walked inspecting the structure, which, after the Sydney bridge is erected, will be the second largest in the world. Mr Bradfield, in commenting on the Sydney underground railway, expressed the belief that the first section would be open probably in June 1926, and the method of contraction Would tend to follow the London underground rather than that of the New York subway. All the material required would probably be made in Australia, although some of the minor parts would bo contracted for in New York and London. —A. and N.Z. cable.
