IMMIGRANT’S APPLICATION FOR AID. At a meeting of the Wellington Hospital Board thin week Mr A. J. McCurdy said he would like to refer to a man who had made application for charitable aid. Ho was an immigrant who had been sent out and was ICO per cent unlit. A voice: A soldier. Mr McCurdy said the man had boon a soldier, and a few weeks after landing in this country was placed in Pukeora, and had been in hospital ever since. He had no assistance as an emigrant because he was doing clerical work in a motor business. Ho had been recommended for suitable light outdoor work, but when light work was offered to him he refused it preferring to stay at home and nurse the baby while his wife went out to work. They would probably find that he waa nominated by a single man in Welligton. Subsequenly Mr G. Pelherick, chairman of the social welfare committee, stated that the man and his family arrived In New Zealand 11 months ago and he had been in hospital ever since. lie was a full pensioner from the Imperial Army, and nis health was so precarious that he could not work. lie was offered very light work in Ohiro Home, but as his wife could get work lie thought he might as well stay at home and look after tho child while his wife was away supplementing his pension.
“What surprises mo,” said Mr Petlierick,' “and what I-can’t understand is how over the man was allowed to come to this country,”
