DIVORCE IN DOMINION
DEBATE BY CHURCHMEN, Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, Oct. 21. At. the Anglican Synod tho Rev. F. Marty moved a resolution expressing concern at tho alarming increase in divorces in New Zealand and urging on tho clergy the vital necessity for constant and clour leaching regarding Dhrislian marriages. The mover raid that the Church of England hud definitely laid it down that divorced pensons were not to he re-marned by its ministers, but the parties went ofl lo other denominations that were thoughtvery broad-minded Tho Rev. Mr Bell characterised the New Zealand law on divorce as' “a- positive disgrace to any country calling itself Christian.”
The Rev. Mr Steele said lie thought, the church ishould have no relations with persons who had committed the sin ot remarriage after divorce. Bishop Averill deplored the lack of a strong public opinion. He had the greatest possible sympathy for the really innocent party, but- he could not see that the church could permit the re-marriage of divorced persons, lie thought lhe real evil wan not so much divorce as re-marriage. The debate was adjourned.
